Outdoor Education

There are three main avenues through the OEC's, which are open to individuals wishing to training for employment in the area of outdoor education or outdoor pursuits.

These are:

Proficiency and Leadership Qualifications - Each of the Outdoor Education Centres Completing run proficiency and leadership training courses and assessments in the various adventure sports.

These are run on behalf of the National Governing Bodies for each sport.

The OEC training courses and assessments include:

Canoeing
Hillwalking
Rock-climbing
Orienteering
Windsurfing
Caving
Sailing

Achill OEC, Kinsale OEC , Cappanalea OEC and Tanagh OECrun full-time training courses for students who have completed their secondary schooling.

These courses are NCVA level 2 and focus upon:

Sailing
Windsurfing
Canoeing
Orienteering
Hillwalking
Rock- climbing

Successful students can enter employment at assistant instructor level after year 1 and instructor level after year 2.

These programmes are also open to VTOS students. The Higher Links programme allows successful graduates from these courses direct access on some of the 3rd level National Certificate related academic courses.

Outdoor Education Centre Employment Opportunities

Each of the twelve OEC's are continually interviewing or recruiting instructors to work in a full-time or part-time on their programmes.

Throughout the year opportunities arise for employment in the outdoor education centres, so it is advisable for those interested in working in the outdoors, to have their C.V.'s presented to the centres or better still to have visited each of the centres.

Those seeking employment should:

hold appropriate outdoor adventure sports qualifications
have a wide range and depth of experience
be interested in working with people
be able to work well in a team
